The Full Story
Divine Planet began in 2004 as an offshoot of an import business owned by Sonja and Michael McGinnis. They had been importing jewelry, textiles and handicrafts from India since the mid-1990s, and decided to open a retail store in downtown Kapaa, directly across from Olympic Cafe.

That first store was a success, so they expanded their product range to include beads and jewelry making suppllies. A second Divine Planet followed in 2007 in Ching Young Village in Hanalei. After that, there was a third store at Kukui Grove Mall in Lihue, another store (Aloha From Hanalei) was added in Ching Young Village in 2008., We added a fourth store in Downtown Kapaa (Aloha From Kauaʻi), which we later sold.

After many years in retail on Kauaʻi, we have narrowed our focus to concentrate on visitors. No more beads and findings, but still plenty of fantastic products. For the past several years we have been expanding our locally made product line.

We have been making wood postcards, coasters, fridge magnets and signs since 2017. In 2024 we began producing coffee mugs, metal tumblers, ceramic tiles, tea towels, drink coolers and more at our warehouse in Lihuʻe.

We have slimmed our operation down to three stores: One in Hanalei and two located side-by-side in Old Koloa Town. We are always on the hunt for new and unusual gifts that appeal to visitors and local customers alike, with an emphasis on locally-made.
