The Story of Paper Star Lanterns

Hanging paper star lanterns are a popular decorative accent that add spice to
living rooms, bedrooms, dorms and kids’ rooms.  They have been featured on
HGTV and on MTV, but did you know that they originated as part of the Diwali
festival in India?

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a traditional Hindu celebration dating back
thousands of years.  The Festival of Lights is also celebrated by Jains, Sikhs
and Nepalese Buddhists.  This holiday lasts for six days and generally occurs
in October or November.  The date varies based on the lunar months of the
Hindu Calendar of India.

The symbolism of a light in the darkness has several manifestations in Hindu
mythology.  The broadest interpretation has to do with the concept of Atman, the
light that is present in every human being that transcends the physical body.

The lights of Diwali are also a representation of goodness and faith after an
absence, as suggested in the Ramayana, one of the basic texts of Hinduism.
The concept of light in darkness also serves to represent the triumph of good
over evil or ignorance.

So beyond adding a touch of flair that makes your room “pop,” take comfort in
the fact that the warm glow given off by paper star lanterns is a symbol of the
eternal light of spirit that radiates in every person.
