Summer's
Over...
Now if only this heat would go away! Labor Day marks
the unofficial end of the Summer season: kids are back in school
and no more vacations... It also means it's time to start thinking
about Christmas.
What? You aren't
thinking about the Holidays yet? Well if you are planning to give
beaded creations made by yourown two hands, now is a great time
to start thinking about who gets what, and what materials you will
need.
Along these
lines, we have a couple of great promotions this month that I am
really excited about.
Currently at
both stores we have a show of loose stones. These semiprecious
gemstones can be used for making jewelry, for other craft projects,
for healing stone therapy, or just for decorating your workspace
or meditation area. We have a really nice selection of many different
shapes, stones and sizes, and the prices will make you even happier.
Next, we will
be having our first-ever DivineDesignDay. Whether you are
a seasoned pro or just getting started, this event should definitely
make your agenda. Come down to either store on Saturday, September
16, with the coupon below and design and make your own bracelet
for free. We'll supply the beads, tools and know-how, you just bring
your inspiration! Also with your coupon, you can take 20% off
any beading purchase of $20 or more. Please join us for this one-day
event, and bring a friend: your coupon is good for up to two people!
(Fine print: Not valid with any other promotions,
one bracelet per customer, please.)
Finally, on
September 23, we kick off our big Pearl Strand Event. We will be
offering a big selection of beautiful pearls, all at 50% off.
If you've ever been to our sale, you know it can get crazy, so shop
early. The promotion runs from September 23 to October 1 at both
stores.
My trip to Thailand
and India was lots of work (really!), but I found some wonderful
new items that have already begun to arrive. In addition to fresh
bead strands, I have found some gorgeous new skirts and tops, and
we have some rich, textural home decor items from India that are
sorely needed on Kauai.
Please check
our class schedule either in the stores or on the web. We have some
new additions this month, most notably the chain mail bracelet class
taught by Herman Coen on Thursday, September 17 at our Kapaa store.
That's it for
now, hope to see you soon!

September Birthstone:
Sapphire
All gem
quality corundum that is not red is referred to as sapphire. Sapphire
comes in a range of colors like blue, orange, yellow, violet, green,
white and pink. Unless a color is stated, sapphire is assumed to be
blue. Some sapphires (color change sapphires) will change between
blue and violet depending on the light. Red corundum is known as Ruby.
Sapphire has
a hardenss of 9, so it is generally quite durable. Despite this,
sapphires are subject to chipping and fracture if handled roughly.
Currently there
is much buzz over treatments that enhance the quality of the stone
but are considered "dishonest" because they are done without
documentation. These treatments involve the injection of a molten
glass-like substance into tiny fissures and cracks within the stone.
The result is
a stone that often values higher than it should, since the treatment
is nearly invisible. Consequently dealers sometimes pay top dollar
for "flawless" stone that may later be determined to be
"enhanced," and thus less valuable. Any treatment of high
quality sapphires will be documented by reputable dealers.
Reputable dealers
also will not use the following misleading terms: "Brazilian sapphire"
(actually blue topaz or similar color tourmaline), "Lux sapphire",
"Lynx sapphire" and "Water Sapphire" (Iolite). Good quality sapphire
is found in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and India. The Montana mines in
the USA have produced some beautiful cornflower blue sapphires.
Darker colored sapphire is mined in Thailand, Australia, and Nigeria.
Other mines are in Brazil, Cambodia, Columbia, Kenya, and Malawi.
