Gettin' Back
To It
Hard to believe, but summer is almost over. Before
much longer, the kids will be back in school, and the season's languid
pace will quicken.
We hope to end
summer with a flourish by offering a couple of cool deals to you,
our valuable customer. First off, there's the coupon at left. We
invite you to come on down and take 30% off
any non-sale item in the store. This promotion is exclusive for
recipients of this email: this special offer is not available to
the general public. Congratulations for making the cut!
Next, we'll
be mixing things up a bit with our first ever Crystal
& Findings Event. This promotion will take place
August 19-27, and will feature specially priced Swarovski Crystal.
We'll also be offering 25% off select findings, including clasps,
earwires, jump rings and more. Drop by early to take advantage of
the best selection as supplies are limited.
On Tuesday,
August 1, I will head off to Thailand and India for a couple of
weeks. Exciting new finds will start arriving in the stores August
12, and will include new beads, jewelry, textiles and home decor.
If you have
any special requests, just drop by the store and add them to the
list, or you can email
me.
We just got
a new shipment of drapes in from one
of our Indian suppliers. There is a wide variety of styles and colors
available at both stores. If you are in need of new window coverings,
stop on in to see our great selection.
Last month our
beading classes were a big hit, especially
the textured metal class taught by Jennie Andruk at our Lihue store.
She is offering similar class August 20 in our Lihue store: a hammered
bracelet and earring set. Check the schedule below for this and
other great August classes.

August Birthstone:
Peridot
 |
Sometimes
called the volcanic gem because it is born in fire, small peridot
(pronounced "pear-uh-doe") crystals are often found
in basaltic rocks created by volcanoes and in meteors that fall
to earth. A few of these "extraterrestrial gems" have
even been faceted into cut gemstones!
Peridot is
the gem form of the mineral olivine. Because the iron which creates
the color is an integral part of its structure, it is found only
in green, ranging from a summery light yellowish green to a "7-up
bottle" green.
This lustrous
green gem was mined in ancient Egypt on an island called Zeberget.
According to legend, the mining was done at night because lit
was said that the rough stone could not be easily seen during
the day. Zeberget was overrun with poisonous snakes that made
mining a very dangerous occupation until one Pharaoh finally had
them all driven into the sea. The Romans called it the "emerald
of the evening," since its green color was visible even by lamplight.
Brought back
to Europe by the Crusaders, peridot was used to adorn medieval
churches. Large stones more than 200 carats in size were used
to decorate the Shrine of the Three Magi at the Cologne Cathedral.
Peridot is
considered a protection stone: it was used drive away evil spirits.
This power was thought to be intensified when the stone was set
in gold. It's mystical quality was also said to increase the effects
of any medicine drunk from a goblet carved from the gemstone.
Today most
peridot is mined by Native Americans in Arizona on the San Carlos
Reservation. Fine large peridot are found in Myanmar (formerly
Burma) and it is also mined in China and Sri Lanka. In 1994, an
exciting new deposit of peridot was discovered in Pakistan, producing
stones of the highest quality ever found. The new mine is located
15,000 feet above sea level in the far west of the Himalayas,
in the Pakistan portion of Kashmir. Beautiful large crystals of
peridot have been found, some that cut magnificent large gemstones
(one stone was over 300 carats!). This new discovery, combined
with fashion's enduring love for lime green, has revived interest
in peridot and increased the popularity of this gemstone.
Although peridot
is sometimes referred to in Hawaii as the fire goddess Pele's
tears, most of the peridot sold here today is from Arizona. The
photo at right shows some rough peridot collected at Wailua on
Kaua'i. Most of the pieces shown are tiny, about 1/32" across,
but some of the larger crystals measure 1/4" across. We will
be attempting to set these in silver pendants, depending on the
integrity of the individual stones. More on this another time...

a clay-like material. With PMC, you can mold, shape, layer and emboss
an artistic creation like you would with ceramic clay. Once the
piece is air dried, it can be placed in a kiln or heated with a
