Christmas
in July?
It may seem that way if you drop by either location
of Divine Planet this weekend during our earring promotion. Every
pair of earrings in the store (except consignment pieces) will be
25% off the marked price. There will be dozens of styles to choose
from, including silver, shell, semiprecious and more. As you probably
know, our earrings are already priced well, but at 25% off they
are a steal! We've brought in additional stock for this first-time
sale.
Can you ever
have too many earrings? We think not...
Next month I
will be headed off on a buying trip. This time I'll go to Thailand
and India for beads, home decor and accessories. If you have any
special requests, just drop by the store and add them to the list,
or you can email
me.
We have gotten
a new selection of Tahitian pearls in the Kapaa store. Our supplier
has provided us with a nice selection of unusual rings featuring
cubic zirconia and lab-created opal.
On Friday, July
7, we will be getting a big shipment of semiprecious stone beads
in. It may take a few days to get them out on the floor, but be
sure to stop by soon for the best selection.
July Agenda:
July 7 - 10, 25% off our already well-priced earrings.
July 14 - 23,
buy any lantern in the store, get a free electric cord. $5 value!
Every Thursday,
6:30pm, classes at our Kapaa store.*
Every Sunday,

July Birthstone:
Ruby
 |
Ruby,
a medium to dark red jewel, has been considered the most valuable
member of the mineral species corundum (aluminum oxide) for thousands
of years. All other colors of corundum are, by definition, called
"sapphire." A bright "fire engine red" color, designated by the
term "Burmese" (since the color is more prevalent there, and was
first found in that area) is considered the world's finest.
Ruby was
said to be the most precious of the twelve stones God created
when he created all things and this "lord of gems" was placed
on Aaron's neck by God's command. In the Indian Sanskrit, ruby
is called ratnaraj, or "king of precious stones" and ratnanayaka,
"most precious of stones."
The ruby mines
of Myanmar (formerly Burma) are older than history: stone age
and bronze age mining tools have been found in the mining area
of Mogok. Rubies from the legendary mines in Mogok often have
a pure red color, which is described as "pigeon's blood," although
that term is more a romantic description than actual trade reference.
Rubies are
often heat treated at the mine to enhance their appearance. Heating
the stone improves clarity and minimizes brown and purple tones.
With a hardness of 9, ruby is considered to be one of the most
durable of gemstones other than diamond.
Since demand
for fine rubies is really only limited by the tiny supply available,
new finds are always exciting news. The most recent news is an
exciting new mining area in Myanmar called Mong Hsu. This deposit
is producing large quantities of commercial quality "Burma"
ruby and also significant quantities of fine quality "Burma"
ruby, particularly in sizes up to a carat.
The new deposit
has also affected the world capital of the ruby business: Thailand.
Many of the ruby traders and cutters from Chanthaburi and Bo Rai
(in Thailand) have moved to Mae Sai in Thailand. In Tachilek in
Myanmar, across the border from Mae Sai, a flourishing trade in
Mong Hsu ruby has transformed a village into a prosperous town.
Most Mong Hsu ruby is cut and marketed in Thailand.

Precious
Metal Clay Intro
Instructor: Mike & Sonya McGinnis
Date: July 6th, 6:30 - 8:30
Fee: $55 Materials Included
Join us for an introductory class in Precious Metal Clay and learn
how to work with this wonderful new material! You will learn how
to make a pendant using helpful tips and techniques. PMC stands
for Precious Metal Clay, a cool polymer that is made with microscopically
small bits of silver held together with an organic binder to make
a clay-like material. With PMC, you can mold, shape, layer and emboss
an artistic creation like you would with ceramic clay. Once the
piece is air dried, it can be placed in a kiln or heated with a
butane torch to burn off the organic binder. What remains is a finished
product that is 99% pure silver, a wearable piece of precious metal
art.
